The "back road" is the best thing that happened in the sub.

Yeah, Angela those were the good old days. You gotta go a distance now to get a piece of cane.

You also had to use your imagination to have fun too. Like my brothers and their friends Jeff Collie and Anthony, I can remember they would go rabbit hunting with their BB guns. One day I guess they were just in the cane fields playing. They say they were playing cowboys and indians when Simeon one of my brothers was shot in the leg by my younger brother. He claimed the bullet ricochet, from what I couldn't tell you. But he had to say something coming home with his shirt all bloody tied around his legs. He knew Mr. Gordon didn't play and would have added insult to his injury with that belt.
I thought it was so funny and I messed with them a while asking which one he was the cowboy or the indian.

I remember growing up in the Sub back in the early 70's when the back of the sub didn't even exist. There were only cane fields back there. It doesn't seem like the sub has been around for that long. We moved there when I was in the first grade and I attended Gladeview Elem.
We had the best time on weekends going to play on the playground at Gladeview and going in the "cane patch" and chewing cane all day. We knew when the street lights came on, it was time to be in the house. Those were the good old days!!!
